Hearts’ derby win is a ‘statement’

Given the tight nature of past Edinburgh derbies, few could have predicted Hearts’ 4-0 victory over rivals Hibs last weekend – including Scotland captain Rachel Corsie.

Hibs beat the Jambos three times in four meetings last year and despite both teams making strong starts to the season and the game being played at Easter Road, it was Eva Olid’s side who triumphed on Friday night.

“Hibs have taken us a bit by surprise, we wondered: will we see a more familiar Hibs than the one we know best?” Corsie said on the BBC’s Behind The Goals podcast.

“I expected the game to be closer but when you look at the game, overall it was a really good game to watch. Eilidh Shore’s goal to kick things off was a really good finish.

“The fact that there were 4,000 spectators is a good indicator. I would like to see this figure much higher, because once people realise that there is a rivalry between the players, in a healthy way, both groups of supporters will support their team.”

Before the game, Hibs had only dropped points this season – against Celtic – while Hearts had only lost to Glasgow City.

“I was surprised, I thought it would be a closer contest,” said former Scotland midfielder and current Motherwell manager Leanne Crichton.

“We [Motherwell] I’ve played against both teams in recent weeks and I haven’t seen a gap between them.

“Hibs didn’t have a goal threat, couldn’t capitalise and score. It was disappointing from their point of view. What an incredible result for Hearts and another statement to continue their form.

“It’s a tough game for Hibs and I’m sure they’ll be looking to the next derby, whenever it comes, and trying to get their revenge. That doesn’t take away from the good start they’ve had to the season.”
