Australian field hockey player suspended for trying to buy cocaine at Paris Olympics

SYDNEY (AP) — Field hockey player Tom Craig has been banned for 12 months by the sport’s governing body for trying to buy cocaine at the Paris Olympics.

Craig was arrested but released without charge after trying to buy drugs in Paris on August 7 at a party following the end of his Olympic campaign.

He faced Australian media in Paris after French prosecutors released a statement confirming the Olympian, now 29 – a silver medallist in Tokyo three years ago – had been given a criminal warning and released after spending a night in custody.

“Following an investigation into the arrest of National Men’s Hockey Team athlete Tom Craig at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hockey Australia’s Integrity Unit has imposed a 12-month suspension,” Hockey Australia said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Six months of this suspension will be served in full, with the remaining six months suspended in full, subject to compliance with conduct and behaviour requirements.”

Hockey Australia said Craig would remain eligible for selection in the 2025 men’s national team, which is expected to be announced later this year.

The Australian men’s team placed sixth in Paris.
