Arizona Golf Association Names 4 Hall of Fame Inductees; ASU Men Win First Tournament of Season

The Arizona Golf Association Hall of Fame committee has announced the four inductees for its 2024 class.

Rob Collins, Amy Fruhwirth and Joe Shershenovich were selected as modern candidates, while Ed Gowa, longtime executive director of the Arizona Golf Association, was named a legacy candidate. They will be inducted at a ceremony at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Collins has been the golf course superintendent at Paradise Valley Country Club since 1995 and has led numerous water conservation initiatives. Collins also serves as the chair of the Arizona Alliance for Golf’s Water Policy Committee, where he “is actively involved in discussions with the Arizona Department of Water Resources to develop practical water regulations for commercial users in the state,” according to the AGA.

Amy Fruhwirth is a former Arizona State golfer who was a three-time All-American and helped the Sun Devils win their first of seven NCAA titles in 1990. She won twice on the LPGA during her 11-year professional career.

Joe Shershenovich is a member of the PGA of America and was named Director of Golf in 1994 when Grayhawk Golf Club opened.

Ed Gowan served as executive director of the Arizona Golf Association for 36 years. The organization had two employees and 120 clubs and 23,000 members when it began. When Gowan retired, the AGA had 20 employees and more than 600 clubs and 90,000 members. He also founded the Arizona Golf Foundation, the charitable arm of the AGA. He also served as rules chair and tournament director for the LPGA.

ASU men’s team wins first tournament of the season

The Arizona State men’s golf team started its 2024-25 season in the win column. The Sun Devils won the Sahalee Players Championship on Sunday at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington, by 11 strokes over Florida.

Oregon’s Aiden Krafft won the gold medal, but ASU had two players tied for second: 2024 U.S. Amateur champion Josele Ballester and Preston Summerhays, who finished one shot behind. It’s Ballester’s ninth top-five finish in her collegiate career.

The ASU men’s team won four games last season, including the Pac-12 championship.

Charles Schwab Cup Championship Tickets on Sale

The 35th annual Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club will once again serve as the finale of the 2024 PGA Tour Champions season and crown the season’s points race champion.

Tickets for the event are now on sale at schwabcup.com. The event will run from November 7-10 and will be played over four days and 72 holes, in stroke-play mode, with the top 36 golfers on the rankings.

Ernie Els currently leads the rankings, with Stephen Ames, Steven Alker, Richard Green and KJ Choi rounding out the top five.

Daily tickets are $25. A weekly pass is $85. For $75 per day or $200 per week, fans can purchase tickets to The Oasis, which serves $1 beers for birdies and premium food and beverage options in a special location near the 15th tee and 17th green.

Children 15 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a ticketed adult, as will active, reserve, retired, veteran and National Guard military personnel and up to two guests.
