The Motta effect is already at its peak
Usually it takes a while for new coaches to make their mark on a team, but Thiago Motta seems to have settled into the Juventus squad in a surprising and unerring manner.
They sit second after three games and have looked solid in defence, although not in the stifling manner that was the hallmark of Massimiliano Allegri’s second spell in charge.
Juve travel to Tuscany to face Empoli this weekend and despite the Azzurri’s strong start to the season, they will have a tough task against an Old Lady side who not only have yet to concede a goal but have not really looked in danger.
They have conceded just two shots on target in over 270 minutes this season and have been ruthless at the other end of the pitch with a shot conversion rate of 20.7% – which puts them top of the table in every category among all teams in Europe’s top five leagues.
Their 90% pass completion rate is also higher than any other Serie A side at the start of this campaign, making them a refreshing performer under Motta, whose impact is already everywhere in this team.
Milan’s super substitutes must return
In Milan’s final game before the international break, things looked bleak for new coach Paulo Fonseca, as they trailed 2-1 to Lazio with 20 minutes remaining.
Still yet to win a single game as Rossoneri coach, his decision to bench key left-back duo Theo Hernández and Rafael Leão appears to have backfired spectacularly.
So when he called on them and Roma loanee Tammy Abraham in the final minutes, they immediately obliged, as all three combined brilliantly for the Portuguese star to squeeze a low shot under the keeper and salvage a point.
The decision not to start them seems all the more surprising. They are due to return on Saturday night against Venezia at home, a match that Fonseca could have hoped to win to finally launch his career on the Milan bench.
The Tartan Army Invades Naples
For fans in the UK, and particularly Scotland, Napoli’s trip to Cagliari will have a special meaning.
Last week, when the national team lost to Poland, it was a remarkable game for goals, with both men who scored, Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay, now part of Antonio Conte’s new Partenopei midfield, adding to the growing Scottish contingent in Italy.
McTominay, who has been consistently scoring for his country, added another in their next game in Portugal, leaving Napoli fans very excited about what the duo, and the former Manchester United player in particular, will offer in his new surroundings.
He is expected to start in Sardinia (with Gilmour expected to start on the bench), much to the delight of the fans, who have been captivated by what the local media have dubbed ‘McTominayMania’, and who will be desperate to show why they are so excited by his arrival.
64-year-old record awaits Inter Ace
Marcus Thuram has had a brilliant start to the season, easing the burden on overworked Inter captain Lautaro MartÃnez.
He has scored four times in the opening three games of the campaign, one goal fewer than the Argentine’s tally in the same period at the start of last season.
If the former Gladbach striker finds the net when they travel to Monza on Sunday, Inter could then count on players who have scored five goals in their first four games to start a season in consecutive campaigns – something they have not achieved since 1960.
Edwing Firmani and Antonio Angelillo were the star scorers of the era. Will Thuram (and MartÃnez) follow them into the history books? This stadium suggests it has a good chance of succeeding: in Inter’s two trips to Monza, the first division matches produced an average of five goals per game!
When will the goals rain down for Roma?
This summer, Roma added La Liga top scorer Artem Dovbyk to a squad that already included Paulo Dybala, who further endeared himself to fans by rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to stay in the Eternal City.
Matias Soulé, one of Serie A’s most promising young talents, has also been brought in to further aid Daniele De Rossi’s goalscoring options, with Stephan El Shaarawy and Lorenzo Pellegrini also more than capable of contributing. So what has gone wrong so far this season?
Their star-studded attacking line has scored just once so far (the goal coming from Eldor Shomurodov who was made available for transfer in the summer) and of all the teams to score at least once this year in Europe’s top five leagues, the Giallorossi have the lowest shot conversion rate, at 2% on their 49 attempts.
Simply put duty will eventually click in attack. Will that happen in Genoa this weekend?
