Two of the biggest names in athletics have agreed to take part in a 100-metre race to see who is the fastest over the world’s premier distance.

Newly crowned double Olympic pole vault champion Armand Mondo Duplantis will take to the track in a sprint against Norwegian 400m hurdler Karsten Warholm on September 4 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Organised in collaboration between Puma, Red Bull and Weltklasse Zurich, the two athletics stars will face off at the Letzigrund Stadium ahead of the Diamond League meeting scheduled for September 5.

The clash is the result of a nearly year-long back-and-forth between the athletes after a clip was shared on social media of the pair discussing the possibility of a race against each other.

It will be the first time both men have competed in an event since the end of the Olympics. In Paris, Duplantis broke his own world record by clearing 6.25m to win a second Olympic gold medal in the pole vault, while Warholm added a silver medal to the Olympic gold he won at Tokyo 2020.

Although both athletes are professionals in other athletics events, they have remarkably close 100m times, making this race a tantalising prospect.

Warholm, who holds the 400m hurdles world record with a time of 45.94 seconds, clocked a 100m sprint of 10.49 seconds in 2017. Duplantis, meanwhile, clocked 10.57 seconds a year later, while still a senior in high school.

Duplantis also expressed his desire to compete in the sprint relays for Sweden in addition to his pole vault exploits. He said: “I would have loved to do that. And I would like to be part of breaking the Swedish record.”

Fans can buy tickets to the event in Zurich to see which of the two Olympians is truly the fastest over 100m.

When is it?

The event will take place on September 4 at the Letzigrund stadium, the day before the Diamond League in Zurich.

How can I watch it?

The race will be streamed live on Redbull.tv and World Athletics Inside Track, where fans can tune in for free to watch the event.
